Manchester Dentistry Interview: Manchester Dentistry Interview Questions 2026/2027

The University of Manchester runs one of the most respected dental programmes in the UK, and its Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS, A206) interview is a decisive stage: you cannot receive an offer without attending. Manchester uses a five-station Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) that deliberately avoids testing dental science, focusing instead on the non-academic qualities that make a safe, compassionate and effective dentist.

What Is the Manchester Dentistry Interview Format?

Manchester’s BDS interview is a five-station MMI. Each station lasts 7 minutes, with a 2-minute gap (sometimes longer) to move between them, and each station is marked by a separate interviewer who does not see how you performed elsewhere — so a weak station never derails your whole interview.

Your first station is chosen at random, and you then rotate around the circuit. Crucially, there is no reading or writing component and no information provided in advance for any station — every task is delivered live and spoken.

For Home-fee applicants, interviews are held in person on the Manchester campus. Overseas-fee applicants may be interviewed online via Zoom, though they can attend in person if they prefer. Interviews normally run from January to March, and all interviewees receive detailed guidance by email beforehand.

Manchester Dentistry Interview: Manchester Dentistry Interview Questions 26/2027…. What Manchester Assesses – Key Traits?

Manchester explicitly states that the MMI takes ‘a wider view’ of applicants — beyond grades — to check you meet its non-academic criteria. Across the five stations, expect the assessors to probe:

AttributeWhat it means at Manchester
Communication skillsClarity of speech, coherent reasoning, active listening and the ability to articulate your thoughts naturally under time pressure.
Motivation & realistic insightA genuine, specific reason for choosing dentistry (not medicine), and a realistic understanding of what a dental career actually involves.
Work/life experience & reflectionMany stations revolve around past experiences — work, volunteering, caring roles — and reward reflection on what you learned over a list of achievements.
Ethics, empathy & integrityThe ability to reason through ethical dilemmas, respect patients, show empathy and uphold professional standards.
Interpersonal skills & resilienceCompassion, maturity, responsibility, and the ability to handle stress and interpersonal challenges — the day-to-day reality of patient care.

Manchester Dentistry Interview: Manchester Dentistry Interview Questions 26/2027 – How Manchester Selects and Shortlists Applicants

All applicants must sit the UCAT in the year of application — it is mandatory. Applicants are first screened for academic eligibility (A-levels or equivalent); those who don’t meet the academic bar do not progress to interview.

Manchester then ranks eligible applicants primarily by UCAT score to decide who is invited. Manchester also applies a strict SJT rule — applicants in Band 3 or Band 4 are not considered, which is stricter than most dental schools (many only exclude Band 4).

For 2025 entry, reported UCAT interview thresholds were approximately 2840–2950 for standard applicants and around 2750–2800 for widening-participation (WP+) applicants — but these move every cycle and are published retrospectively, so treat them as guidance rather than a fixed target.

Manchester Dentistry Interview: Manchester Dentistry Interview Questions 26/2027 – Reflecting on Work Experience – the STARR Framework

Whatever the station, strong answers reflect rather than list. Use STARR to turn any experience into genuine insight — the quality that separates offers from rejections.

STARR stepWhat to include
SituationBriefly set the scene — where you were and what was happening. One sentence is often enough.
TaskThe challenge or focus of the moment — what needed to be done or decided.
ActionWhat you (or the professional you observed) actually did — the specific behaviour or decision.
ResultThe outcome — what happened as a result of that action.
ReflectionThe most important step: what it taught you about dentistry, patients or yourself — and how it shapes your suitability.

Manchester Dentistry Interview: Manchester Dentistry Interview Questions 26/2027 – Model Answer Outline: “Why dentistry, and why Manchester?”

What they assess: genuine, informed motivation; realistic understanding of dentistry; specific reasons for choosing Manchester.

Structure your answer in three moves:

  • Open with what genuinely draws you to dentistry — the blend of science, manual precision and long-term patient relationships — anchored in a specific experience (a placement, a conversation with a dentist, a caring role) rather than a cliché.
  • Connect to Manchester specifically — the course structure, clinical exposure, ethos or community focus that fits how you want to learn. Be concrete; avoid generic praise that could apply to any school.
  • Close with realistic insight — acknowledge the challenges (workload, emotional demands, technical skill) and show you’re committed to developing the dexterity, empathy and resilience the profession needs.
