University of Birmingham Medicine Entry Requirements: How Birmingham Selects Medicine Applicants

For Home applicants, Birmingham generates an overall application score: GCSE score (max 4.5), UCAT score (max 4.0) and contextual score (max 1.5) — weighted 45% GCSE, 40% UCAT, 15% contextual. The highest-scoring applicants are invited to interview; where scores tie, applicants are ranked by UCAT Verbal Reasoning.

The UCAT is converted from national deciles into a 0–4 score (10th decile = 4.000 … 4th = 1.333 … 1st = 0.000). The contextual score is based on your home postcode’s POLAR4 quintile (Q1–2 = 1.5, Q3 = 1.2, Q4 = 0.9, Q5 = 0.6).

Birmingham states it cannot advise the interview threshold in advance because it varies each year — it publishes previous-cycle statistics instead. For international applicants, no application score is calculated: they’re checked against academic thresholds, ranked by total UCAT, then assessed on non-academic evidence (personal statement).

University of Birmingham Medicine Entry Requirements: Graduate, Mature & Widening-Participation Routes

Birmingham has discontinued its graduate-entry course but accepts graduates onto the standard A100. Graduates need an achieved or predicted first-class or 2:1 degree in any subject, GCSEs typically grade A/B in Science, English and Maths, and A-levels typically ABB including Chemistry and a second science (the A-level subject requirement may be waived if the degree’s biomedical-science content is over 50%). A relevant qualification (min A-level standard) must be no more than 5 years old. Graduate applicants meeting thresholds are ranked for interview by UCAT score.

Widening participation: applicants who received Free School Meals or spent time in local authority care receive a contextual score added to their application score, with an offer of AAA if successful. The Pathways to Birmingham scheme typically offers two grades below the standard offer (e.g. A*AA → ABB), focused on non-selective state schools across the West Midlands.

University of Birmingham Medicine Entry Requirements: How Birmingham Uses the UCAT

Birmingham has no minimum UCAT cut-off for Home applicants. Your total UCAT (the three cognitive subtests, excluding SJT) is ranked by national decile and converted to a 0–4 score (10th = 4.000, 9th = 3.556, 8th = 3.111, 7th = 2.667, 6th = 2.222, 5th = 1.778, 4th = 1.333, 3rd = 0.889, 2nd = 0.444, 1st = 0.000), then weighted at 40%.

The SJT band is not in the ranking UCAT, but it is used at interview/offer (for 2026 face-to-face interviews, Band 1 scores highest and Band 4 zero). For the full decile method, contextual points and international thresholds, see our dedicated Birmingham UCAT cut-off page.

University of Birmingham Medicine Entry Requirements: Birmingham Medicine Interview Format

Birmingham uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) — face-to-face at the Medical School for Home applicants and online for international applicants. For 2026 Home interviews: six or seven 8-minute stations (including 2 minutes’ preparation) mixing interview, role-play and calculation tasks. International interviews are online via Zoom — at least two MMI stations (including role-play) plus a separate online calculations station on another date.

Birmingham may set a minimum performance standard for each station (excluding calculations) — so you can miss out even with a good overall score if you underperform in a single station.

University of Birmingham Medicine Entry Requirements: Birmingham Medicine Entry Requirements — FAQs

What A-level do you need for University of Birmingham Medicine?

The standard offer is A*AA including Chemistry and a second science from Biology/Physics/Maths, with applicants predicted at least AAA. For contextual applicants the offer is AAA (predicted at least AAB).

What are the entry requirements for Birmingham Medicine?

Apply via UCAS, sit the UCAT in your year of application, meet the academic and non-academic requirements, and attend an interview if invited. Academically (school-leaver route): A*AA at A-level and seven GCSEs including English Language, Maths and Biology + Chemistry (or dual science) at 6/B or higher.

What UCAT score do you need for Birmingham?

There’s no fixed cut-off for Home applicants. Birmingham converts your UCAT total (excluding SJT) into points using national deciles and combines it with GCSE and contextual points for interview ranking. It publishes previous-cycle thresholds rather than a fixed score — see our Birmingham UCAT cut-off page.

Is Birmingham Medical School hard to get into?

It’s competitive. In 2023–24 (entry 2024), Birmingham had 1,933 Home applications for 372 Home places (1,052 interviews, 383 enrolled). Competition ratios for A100 Sept 2026 list 5 Home applicants per place and 17.6 international applicants per place.

Can I get into Medicine with A*A*B?

If you only have three A-levels, A*A*B does not meet Birmingham’s standard offer (A*AA) or contextual offer (AAA). Some widening-participation routes involve reduced offers (e.g. Pathways to Birmingham gives a Medicine example of A*AA → ABB), but these are scheme-specific and subject to change, and you still need the required subjects.
