Cardiff University’s School of Dentistry uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) — a values-based circuit of short, themed stations mapped to the qualities expected of dental professionals. Cardiff is also one of the earliest dental schools to interview, with BDS dates set for 12–23 January 2026, and offers the option to interview in Welsh, English or a mix.

What Is the Cardiff Dentistry Interview Format?
Cardiff’s BDS interview is an MMI — a series of short, carefully timed stations you rotate around in turn. Historically Cardiff has run around 10 stations, each roughly 5 minutes with about 2 minutes’ preparation beforehand, and the whole circuit takes roughly 1.5 hours including movement and briefings.
For 2026 entry, BDS (A200) MMI dates are 12–23 January 2026 — notably early in the cycle. Home-fee applicants interview in person in Cardiff; Overseas applicants may be offered online MMIs. Online interviews are not routinely offered to home candidates.
Cardiff offers a distinctive language option: you may take your MMI in Welsh, English or a mix of both — this gives no advantage and no penalty. Each station is scored by a trained assessor, and your aggregate score across stations determines your result.

Cardiff Dentistry Interview: Cardiff Dentistry Interview Questions 2026/2027 – How Cardiff Selects and Shortlists Applicants
Cardiff scores dentistry applicants on a combination of GCSE points, A-level achievement and UCAT. The SJT Band 4 is not accepted. Applicants meeting the threshold are invited to the MMI.
Because Cardiff interviews early (12–23 January 2026), shortlisting and invitations happen quickly after the October deadline — so be ready to prepare over the Christmas period.
Interview performance is scored per station by trained assessors, and your aggregate score is what matters — a weak station won’t sink you if you perform well across the circuit.

Cardiff Dentistry Interview: Cardiff Dentistry Interview Questions 2026/2027 – Reflecting on Work Experience – the STARR Framework
Whatever the station, strong answers reflect rather than list. Use STARR to turn any experience into genuine insight — the quality that separates offers from rejections.
| STARR step | What to include |
| Situation | Briefly set the scene — where you were and what was happening. One sentence is often enough. |
| Task | The challenge or focus of the moment — what needed to be done or decided. |
| Action | What you (or the professional you observed) actually did — the specific behaviour or decision. |
| Result | The outcome — what happened as a result of that action. |
| Reflection | The most important step: what it taught you about dentistry, patients or yourself — and how it shapes your suitability. |

What they assess: genuine, informed motivation; realistic understanding of dentistry; specific reasons for choosing Cardiff.
Structure your answer in three moves:
- Open with what genuinely draws you to dentistry — the blend of science, manual precision and long-term patient relationships — anchored in a specific experience (a placement, a conversation with a dentist, a caring role) rather than a cliché.
- Connect to Cardiff specifically — the course structure, clinical exposure, ethos or community focus that fits how you want to learn. Be concrete; avoid generic praise that could apply to any school.
- Close with realistic insight — acknowledge the challenges (workload, emotional demands, technical skill) and show you’re committed to developing the dexterity, empathy and resilience the profession needs.
