Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: University of Manchester Medicine Acceptance Rate & Admissions Statistics

The University of Manchester runs one of the largest medical schools in the UK — around 390 Home places plus 30 Overseas on the five-year MBChB (A106), with roughly 7 applicants per place.

Manchester’s selection is distinctive in two ways. It sets a genuinely high GCSE bar (seven GCSEs at grade 7+), and it applies a met-or-not UCAT threshold with a strict SJT rule — Bands 3 and 4 are not currently considered. Get those two things right and you’re in contention; miss either and the application stops there.

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: How Manchester Selects Medicine Applicants

Manchester operates a clear met-or-not model. Applicants who sit above the cohort UCAT threshold, hold an SJT of Band 1 or 2, and meet the minimum GCSE profile are invited to interview. The personal statement is not scored, and GCSEs are used as minimum eligibility rather than as a sliding score.

When the number of highly-scoring candidates exceeds available interview slots, Manchester then ranks by total UCAT plus SJT band — so a strong test result matters twice.

The SJT rule is the one that catches people out: Manchester does not currently consider Bands 3 or 4. A brilliant cognitive score paired with a Band 3 will not progress, so prepare the SJT as seriously as the rest of the test.

Manchester’s GCSE bar is also genuinely high — seven GCSEs at grade 7 or above — which makes it a stronger fit for applicants with an excellent GCSE profile than schools that ignore GCSEs entirely.

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: Manchester Medicine A-Level Requirements

Manchester’s A-level requirements are flexible on subject combination but strict on what doesn’t count:

  • Standard offer: AAA
  • Must include Biology or Chemistry, plus one further science from Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths, Further Maths or Psychology
  • Contextual (WP+) offer: AAB — same subject requirements
  • Care-experienced or refugee (WP++) offer: ABB — same subject requirements; applicants in local authority care for more than three months or with refugee status may be eligible for an offer two grades below standard
  • Not accepted: General Studies, Critical Thinking and the Extended Project as a third A-level
  • A pass in the science practical endorsements is required
  • Resits are accepted, but you need ABB on the first attempt and the offer then rises to A*A*A

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: Manchester Medicine GCSE Requirements

Manchester sets one of the higher GCSE bars in the UK — this is a genuine gate, not a formality:

  • At least SEVEN GCSEs at grade 7 (A), 8 or 9
  • Must include English Language (or Literature), Mathematics and at least two science subjects at grade 6 (B) or above
  • If Dual Award Science or Core and Additional Science are offered, the minimum required is BB (66)
  • WP+/WP++ applicants: six GCSEs at grade 7+ accepted (rather than seven)
  • GCSE resits are permitted, and up to one Level 2 BTEC may be counted
  • GCSEs are used as minimum eligibility, not as a sliding score

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: Graduate & Mature Applicants

Manchester welcomes graduates and offers two routes. For the standard A106, you need a minimum upper second (2:1) honours degree and to have achieved at least BBB at A-level (32 IB) in your first sitting, plus A-levels meeting the standard subject requirements at grade A.

Manchester also runs an accelerated four-year Graduate Entry Medicine programme (A101), for which the UCAT is scored separately for graduates. If you hold a life-sciences or health-professions degree, compare both routes carefully — the A101 is a year shorter.

All graduate applicants must still meet the GCSE requirements and sit the UCAT.

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: Widening Participation: WP+ and WP++

Manchester runs a two-tier widening-participation scheme that adjusts grades, GCSEs and the UCAT threshold — one of the more comprehensive contextual packages in the UK.

WP+: six GCSEs at grade 7+ accepted (rather than seven), the offer reduces from AAA to AAB, and the UCAT cut-off sits roughly 150 marks below the standard threshold.

WP++ (care-experienced or refugee status): the offer reduces from AAA to ABB. Applicants who have been in local authority care for more than three months, or who have refugee status, may be eligible for an offer two grades below the standard requirement.

Manchester also runs the Manchester Access Programme, which can bring a lower UCAT threshold, a guaranteed interview and lower offer grades for eligible local applicants.

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: How Manchester Uses the UCAT

Manchester applies a met-or-not UCAT threshold: applicants above the cohort threshold (with a Band 1 or 2 SJT and the minimum GCSE profile) are invited to interview.

The SJT rule is strict and decisive: Manchester does not currently consider Bands 3 or 4. This is the most common avoidable reason strong Manchester applications fail, so prepare the SJT properly.

When highly-scoring candidates exceed available interview slots, Manchester ranks by total UCAT plus SJT band — so the test does double duty.

Recent thresholds (new /2,700 scale): the 2025-entry cut-off was around 2,033 for Home non-contextual and about 1,890 for WP+ applicants; reporting for 2026 entry points to roughly 2,060 non-contextual and 1,960 WP+. Thresholds move each cycle with the pool, so aim comfortably above rather than at the line.

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: Manchester Medicine Interview Format

Manchester uses a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) of five stations, each 8 minutes, with applicants able to choose online or in-person delivery in recent cycles — an unusually flexible arrangement.

Manchester’s MMI deliberately does not test dental or medical science. It assesses non-academic criteria: communication, motivation and realistic insight, reflection on work and life experience, ethics and empathy, and interpersonal skills and resilience.

There is no reading or writing component and no information provided in advance — every task is delivered live. Manchester explicitly values natural, honest answers over obviously rehearsed scripts.

Interviews normally run from January to March, and no offer is made without interview.

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: Manchester Medicine Acceptance Rate & Competition

Manchester is one of the largest UK medical schools, which slightly improves the odds — but the GCSE and SJT gates do a lot of filtering before the interview stage:

Places~390 Home + ~30 Overseas
Applications per place~7 : 1
UCAT threshold (2025 entry)~2,033 Home non-contextual; ~1,890 WP+
UCAT threshold (2026 entry, reported)~2,060 non-contextual; ~1,960 WP+
SJTBand 1 or 2 only — Bands 3 and 4 not considered
GCSE gateSeven GCSEs at grade 7+ (six for WP+/WP++)

Manchester’s figures move each cycle with the strength of the applicant pool, and the UCAT threshold is set against the cohort rather than published in advance. Always confirm the latest published data on Manchester’s official course page.

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements: Manchester Medicine for International Students

Manchester reserves around 30 Overseas places out of roughly 420 — a small allocation that makes international competition significantly tougher than the headline 7:1 ratio suggests.

International applicants must meet the same academic standards (AAA with the required science subjects, or IB 37 with 7,6,6 at HL) and the same GCSE-equivalent profile, plus Manchester’s English language requirement.

The same UCAT threshold and SJT Band 1–2 rule apply. Confirm the current international fee and English-language level on Manchester’s official course page.

Manchester Medicine Entry Requirements — FAQs

What are the entry requirements for Manchester Medicine?

AAA at A-level including Biology or Chemistry plus one further science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Maths, Further Maths or Psychology); at least seven GCSEs at grade 7 or above, including English Language, Maths and two sciences at grade 6+; and the UCAT with an SJT of Band 1 or 2. The IB alternative is 37 points with 7,6,6 at Higher Level.

What UCAT score do you need for Manchester Medicine?

Manchester applies a met-or-not threshold set against each cohort. The 2025-entry cut-off was around 2,033 (out of 2,700) for Home non-contextual applicants and about 1,890 for WP+; reporting for 2026 entry points to roughly 2,060 and 1,960. Your SJT must be Band 1 or 2. See our Manchester UCAT cut-off page.

Does Manchester accept SJT Band 3?

No — Manchester does not currently consider SJT Bands 3 or 4. This is a hard gate: a strong cognitive score paired with a Band 3 will not progress to interview, so prepare the SJT as seriously as the cognitive subtests.

What GCSEs do I need for Manchester Medicine?

At least seven GCSEs at grade 7 (A), 8 or 9, including English Language (or Literature), Mathematics and at least two sciences at grade 6 (B) or above. WP+/WP++ applicants may be accepted with six GCSEs at grade 7+. GCSE resits are permitted and up to one Level 2 BTEC may be counted.

Does Manchester accept A-level resits for Medicine?

Yes, but on stricter terms: you need ABB on your first attempt, and the offer then rises to A*A*A. General Studies, Critical Thinking and the Extended Project are not accepted as a third A-level.

Does Manchester offer Graduate Entry Medicine?

Yes — Manchester runs an accelerated four-year A101 Graduate Entry Medicine programme (UCAT scored separately for graduates), and graduates can also apply to the standard five-year A106 with a 2:1 degree plus BBB at A-level (32 IB) at first sitting.

What is Manchester’s contextual offer for Medicine?

WP+ applicants receive an AAB offer (down from AAA), need only six GCSEs at grade 7+, and face a UCAT cut-off roughly 150 marks below the standard threshold. WP++ applicants (care-experienced or refugee status) receive an ABB offer. The Manchester Access Programme can also bring a guaranteed interview.

What is the Manchester Medicine interview format?

A five-station MMI, each station 8 minutes, with applicants able to choose online or in-person delivery in recent cycles. It assesses non-academic criteria only — there is no reading or writing component and no advance information.
