University of Aberdeen Medicine Entry Requirements: How Aberdeen Selects Medicine Applicants

Aberdeen scores applicants using a defined weighting: academic achievement/predictions 30%, admissions test 20%, and interview performance 50%. Your academic and test scores decide who is invited to interview; interview performance is then added, and offers go to applicants with the highest combined scores after interview.

This matters because the interview carries the most weight — so even a strong academic and UCAT profile must be paired with excellent MMI performance. It also means widening-access flags and UCAT uplifts (below) can materially change your competitiveness.

Aberdeen manages student numbers from different parts of the UK to meet targets set by the Scottish Government and Scottish Funding Council — which is one reason ‘acceptance rate’ varies significantly by domicile (see the statistics below).

University of Aberdeen Medicine Entry Requirements: Graduate & Mature Applicants

Aberdeen considers graduates for Year 1 of the 5-year MBChB (no exemptions are granted from any part of the programme). Key academic points: at least an upper second-class (2:1) honours degree, Chemistry to at least grade B at Scottish Higher or A-level (sometimes satisfied through degree-level study), and degree results at the first sitting within the last six years.

Applicants with a non-honours (‘ordinary’) degree may be treated as mature applicants, with routes such as upgrading to honours, taking school-leaving qualifications, or an Access to Medicine course. For Scottish mature/Access routes, Aberdeen may accept SWAP Access to Medical Studies from Edinburgh College or Glasgow Kelvin College (case-by-case).

University of Aberdeen Medicine Entry Requirements: Widening Access & Gateway to Medicine Aberdeen

Aberdeen offers two distinct widening-participation pathways: widening-access adjustments to the main MBChB application, and the dedicated Gateway to Medicine programme.

Widening-access adjustments (2026 entry) include reduced academic minimums — AAB at A-level (or AAAB in S5 for Scottish Highers) with Chemistry and a specified science — a guaranteed interview for Scottish-domiciled WA applicants whose admissions-test score is in the top 75% of Aberdeen applicants, and UCAT uplifts (10% for SIMD20 and/or care-experienced school leavers; 5% for SIMD40 school leavers).

Gateway to Medicine (G2M) is a one-year programme delivered with North East Scotland College (NESCOL). Students who complete it and meet the admissions-test and interview requirements are granted a place on the Aberdeen MBChB. Entry needs a minimum of four Highers at AABB (S4–S6) including two sciences, or specified Scottish college science qualifications. You must meet widening-access criteria (e.g. SIMD postcode, care experience). Graduates, non-Scottish-domiciled, international, and previously-enrolled HE applicants are not eligible for the Gateway route. Interviews are typically in April, with teaching beginning in late August.

University of Aberdeen Medicine Entry Requirements: How Aberdeen Uses the UCAT

The UCAT is required and forms 20% of Aberdeen’s selection score, used (with academics) to decide interview invitations. Aberdeen publishes the lowest admissions-test scores invited to interview as a rough guide, and applies UCAT uplifts for eligible widening-access categories.

Because Aberdeen’s exact interview threshold shifts every cycle, we cover the full picture — historic thresholds, deciles, and how the uplifts work — on our dedicated Aberdeen UCAT cut-off page.

Full detail: the Aberdeen UCAT cut-off This page covers how the UCAT fits into Aberdeen’s overall requirements. For the deep dive — published thresholds, deciles, uplifts and current-scale benchmarking — see our dedicated Aberdeen UCAT cut-off guide at /aberdeen-ucat-cut-off.

University of Aberdeen Medicine Entry Requirements: Aberdeen Medicine Interview Format

Aberdeen interviews between December and April using a modified Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) at the Suttie Centre, Foresterhill. Candidates rotate through stations; each station lasts 5 minutes with two selectors assessing a question/domain, and communication and interpersonal skills are scored at every station. The full MMI lasts about one hour.

Your personal statement is reviewed before interview invitations are issued and assessed during the interview if you’re invited. Aberdeen recommends structuring it around commitment to medicine, knowledge of the core qualities of a doctor, and teamwork — with reflection over listing on work experience.

University of Aberdeen Medicine Entry Requirements: Aberdeen Medicine Entry Requirements — FAQs

What A-level do you need for Aberdeen University Medicine?

For standard entry, AAA at A-level with Chemistry required, plus one from Biology/Human Biology, Maths or Physics, plus a third subject (General Studies and Global Perspectives and Research are excluded). Widening-access applicants may be eligible for a reduced AAB offer.

What is the easiest med school to get into in the UK?

There’s no reliably ‘easiest’ medical school — competitiveness changes each cycle and schools weight academics, UCAT and interviews differently. Compare your profile against each school’s minimums, how they use the UCAT and interview, and their published admissions data. Aberdeen’s transparent scoring (30% academic, 20% UCAT, 50% interview) and published statistics make it easier to judge your realistic chances.

Can I get into Medicine with A*A*B?

Aberdeen’s standard requirement is AAA at one sitting, so a profile containing a B would not meet the standard offer. However, Aberdeen publishes a widening-access minimum (AAB with Chemistry and a specified science) and references extenuating-circumstances policies — so whether A*A*B is viable depends entirely on your context and the overall strength of your application.

Is the University of Aberdeen good for Medicine?

Aberdeen is transparent about how it scores applicants (academic + UCAT + interview) and publishes admissions and test-threshold data, which genuinely helps applicants make evidence-based choices. Its graduates must meet high GMC professional standards, and its widening-access provision is well developed.

Does Aberdeen have a Medicine foundation year?

Aberdeen’s main widening-participation pathway for Medicine is the Gateway to Medicine route delivered with NESCOL — a one-year programme that leads to progression onto the MBChB if the admissions-test and interview requirements are met.

What are Aberdeen Medicine’s entry requirements for international students?

Check that your qualifications meet Aberdeen’s country-specific guidance, that you meet the English language requirement (IELTS 7.0 overall with 7.0 speaking), and be aware there is a set number of overseas places, which makes international competition intense (see the statistics table above).
