UCL Medical School is one of the most competitive in the UK — Top 10 globally for Medicine, based in Bloomsbury with placements at UCH, the Royal Free and the Whittington. The MBBS BSc (A100) is a six-year programme with a compulsory intercalated BSc in Year 3.
The single most important thing to understand about UCL is that it is effectively UCAT-binary: it does not score your GCSE profile beyond the minimum, and it does not score your personal statement to shortlist. Eligible applicants are ranked on total UCAT score, with the SJT as the tiebreaker. Clear that bar and the odds turn strongly in your favour — historically around 78% of interviewed applicants receive an offer.

UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: How UCL Selects Medicine Applicants
UCL’s model is unusually simple, and unusually unforgiving. After an academic screen, eligible applicants are ranked on total UCAT score to decide interview invitations, with the SJT used only as a tiebreaker.
GCSEs are not scored beyond the two compulsory grade B/6 passes, and the personal statement is not scored for shortlisting. Ten grade 9s give you no advantage over a candidate meeting only the minimum — UCL relies on the UCAT to rank.
The practical consequence: if your UCAT is strong, UCL is one of the best-value applications in the country. If your UCAT is average but your GCSEs are outstanding, a GCSE-weighting school will serve you better.
From the interview onwards the picture flips: historically about 78% of interviewed applicants receive an offer, so the UCAT threshold is the real choke-point.
UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: UCL Medicine A-Level Requirements
UCL’s A-level requirement is science-specific, and its resit rule is one of the strictest in the UK:
- Standard offer: A*AA, with A*A in Chemistry and Biology (either order), plus a third subject of your choice
- General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted
- All three A-levels must be studied at the same time and completed within two years, sat at the same sitting
- Linear science A-levels from 2017 must include a pass in the practical endorsement
- A-level resits are NOT accepted in the standard route, and restarting Year 12 is not accepted
- Exception 1: graduates who re-sat A-levels BEFORE their degree may be considered. Exception 2: documented exceptional circumstances (serious illness, bereavement) are considered case-by-case
- UCL encourages (but does not require) the EPQ — useful preparation and a possible interview talking point
UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: UCL Medicine GCSE Requirements
UCL’s GCSE requirement is narrow, and deliberately not used for ranking:
- Grade B/6 minimum in GCSE English Language
- Grade B/6 minimum in GCSE Mathematics
- Equivalents accepted (IGCSE, O-Level, IB/EB) at the equivalent of B/6 or above
- GCSE resits ARE permitted to meet the requirements
- Crucially, UCL does not score or rank your wider GCSE profile — ten grade 9s give no advantage over meeting the two compulsory minimums
UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: Other Accepted Qualifications & What UCL Doesn’t Accept
| Qualification | Requirement |
| International Baccalaureate | 39 points overall; three HL subjects totalling at least 19 points, with HL Biology and Chemistry at 6 and 7 (either order); no score below 5 in any subject. If Maths and English aren’t in your Diploma, offer them at GCSE grade B/6. |
| Access to HE Diploma | Very narrow: the Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) at the College of West Anglia, or one conforming to the QAA subject descriptor for medicine. Minimum 36 credits at Distinction and 9 at Merit, all Level 3. No other Access courses accepted. |
| Other accepted qualifications | European Baccalaureate; Scottish Advanced Highers & Highers; Welsh Baccalaureate; Cambridge Pre-U; Irish Leaving Certificate; Singaporean Cambridge A-Levels/NUS Diplomas; HKDSE/HKALE; CAPE. If your qualification isn’t explicitly listed on the UCL prospectus, the application will not progress. |
| English language (international) | Typically IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with a minimum 7.0 in each component, or an approved equivalent (TOEFL iBT, Cambridge C1/C2, PTE Academic). |

UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: Graduate & Mature Applicants
UCL does not run a separate four-year Graduate Entry Medicine programme. Graduates apply via the same A100 route — but UK degree-holders are exempt from the intercalated BSc (Year 3), completing the course in 5 years instead of 6.
Requirements: a 2:1 UK degree minimum in any subject (final-year students must be predicted a 2:1), plus minimum ABB at A-level taken before your degree, including A-level Chemistry and Biology (or IB HL equivalent). You must not have started but not finished a previous degree.
UCL does NOT accept non-UK degrees for the graduate route. A rare waiver of the A-level Chemistry/Biology requirement exists for graduates who studied substantial Biology/Chemistry modules in a UK degree, with details supplied by your Academic Tutor by 1 September of your application year — very few are granted, so don’t rely on it.
Resits taken after the degree are not accepted under the standard route.
UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: Contextual Offers: The Access UCL Scheme
UCL runs a genuinely generous contextual scheme, Access UCL, for UK-domiciled applicants from underrepresented groups. Eligible Medicine applicants receive a reduced A-level offer of AAB (with AA in Biology and Chemistry) and a reduced UCAT threshold reviewed separately from the Home pool.
No additional application is needed — eligibility is assessed automatically from your UCAS data.
Route 1 (postcode + state school): attended a UK state school for your Level 3 qualifications AND live in an IMD Quintile 1 (decile 1–2) and/or TUNDRA LSOA Quintile 1 postcode. Route 2 (Free School Meals + state school): attended a UK state school for your Level 3 qualifications AND were registered for Free School Meals at least once in the six years to the end of Key Stage 4.
Eligibility applies to the current cycle only and does not carry forward. Only A-levels, IB, Cambridge Pre-U or Scottish Advanced Highers are eligible for a contextual offer. UCL also runs Target Medicine (mentoring plus summer school) for Year 12 students from underrepresented backgrounds.
UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: How UCL Uses the UCAT
The UCAT is the number at UCL. Since the BMAT was withdrawn, UCL uses the total UCAT score to rank eligible candidates for interview, with the SJT band as the tiebreaker. Subtests are not weighted differently — the total is what counts.
Published 2025-entry thresholds (old /3600 scale): Access UCL 2,600; Home 2,800; Overseas 3,060 (capped at 24 places). The average UCAT across all 2025 UCL applicants was 2,859 — the average application already sat at or above the Home cut-off, which tells you how strong the pool is.
For 2026/2027 the maximum dropped to 2,700 (Abstract Reasoning withdrawn), so previous cut-offs are not directly comparable. UCL does not publish a fixed cut-off in advance — the threshold is set after all scores arrive in November.
Realistic targets on the new scale: roughly 2,100+ for Home, 2,300+ for Overseas, and 1,950+ for Access UCL applicants. Treat these as aim points, not guarantees.
You must sit the UCAT in the year of application (previous scores cannot be carried forward), and you may only test once per cycle — re-applicants must resit, even if they interviewed at UCL last year.

UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: UCL Medicine Interview Format
UCL has moved from its historic panel interview to a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) — now the only stage that determines who receives an offer.
Format: up to 8 stations, each around 5 minutes, with 1 minute of reading/preparation before each. Stations may include role-play, ethical-scenario discussion, structured questioning and reflection on your values and experiences.
Home applicants interview in person at Bloomsbury; Overseas applicants online via Zoom (typically February). Interviewers score in real time, and the Admissions Tutor reviews scores after interviews close.
The six qualities UCL assesses: academic curiosity and interest in healthcare; motivation for and understanding of a medical career; problem-solving and reasoning; professional attitudes and values (integrity, empathy, honesty, compassion); teamwork, leadership and resilience; and communication skills.
Your personal statement is not scored, but it may be discussed at the MMI — so everything in it must be true, reflective and something you can speak to.

UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: UCL Medicine Acceptance Rate & Competition
UCL Medicine is UCAT-binary, so the funnel narrows sharply at the shortlisting stage and then widens again:
| Applications per year | ~3,000–3,800 |
| Interviews (Home + Overseas) | ~1,000 (~25–30% of applications) |
| Offers issued | ~700–800 (~18–22% of applications) |
| Places | 334 total — only 24 for Overseas |
| Offer-to-place rate | ~9–11% |
| Interview-to-offer conversion | Historically ~78% |
The key insight: clearing UCL’s UCAT threshold is the single biggest filter between you and an offer. Because UCL doesn’t score GCSEs or personal statements at shortlisting, the UCAT does almost all the work — but from interview onwards the conversion is very high. Confirm the latest figures on UCL’s official course page.
UCL Medicine Entry Requirements: UCL Medicine for International Students
UCL reserves only 24 Overseas places out of 334, which makes international competition among the most intense in the UK — reflected in the consistently higher Overseas UCAT threshold (3,060 on the old scale for 2025 entry, versus 2,800 Home).
International applicants must meet the same academic standard (A*AA with A*A in Chemistry and Biology, or IB 39 with 19 HL points) plus UCL’s English language requirement at Level 4 — commonly IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with a minimum 7.0 in each component.
Note that UCL does not accept non-UK degrees for its graduate (5-year) route, so international graduates without a UK degree apply via the standard A100 as undergraduates.
Overseas applicants interview online via Zoom, typically in February.

UCL Medicine Entry Requirements — FAQs
What are the entry requirements for UCL Medicine?
A*AA at A-level with A*A in Chemistry and Biology (either order) plus a third subject; grade B/6 minimum in GCSE English Language and Maths; and the UCAT. The IB alternative is 39 points with 19 across three Higher Levels including Biology and Chemistry at 6 and 7, and no score below 5. The Access UCL contextual offer is AAB with AA in Biology and Chemistry.
What UCAT score do you need for UCL Medicine?
UCL doesn’t publish a fixed cut-off in advance — it’s set after scores arrive in November. For 2025 entry the published thresholds were Access UCL 2,600, Home 2,800 and Overseas 3,060 (old /3600 scale). On the new /2,700 scale, realistic targets are roughly 2,100+ Home, 2,300+ Overseas and 1,950+ Access UCL. See our UCL UCAT cut-off page.
Does UCL score GCSEs for Medicine?
No. The only GCSE requirement is grade B/6 in English Language and Mathematics, and UCL does not score or rank your wider GCSE profile — ten grade 9s give no advantage over meeting the minimum. UCL relies on the UCAT to rank. GCSE resits are permitted.
Does UCL accept A-level resits for Medicine?
Generally no, and restarting Year 12 isn’t permitted. Two exceptions: graduates who re-sat A-levels before their degree, and documented exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness or bereavement) considered case-by-case. GCSE resits, by contrast, are accepted.
Does UCL offer Graduate Entry Medicine?
Not as a separate fast-track course. Graduates apply via the standard A100 and, if they hold a UK degree, complete it in 5 years because the Year 3 iBSc is waived. You need a 2:1 UK degree, ABB at A-level taken before your degree including Chemistry and Biology. Non-UK degrees are not accepted for this route.
What is the UCL contextual offer for Medicine?
Access UCL gives eligible UK-domiciled applicants a reduced AAB offer (AA in Biology and Chemistry) and a reduced UCAT threshold reviewed separately from the Home pool. Eligibility requires a UK state school plus either an IMD/TUNDRA Quintile 1 postcode or Free School Meals in the six years to Key Stage 4, assessed automatically from UCAS data.
What is the UCL Medicine acceptance rate?
Roughly 9–11% of applicants ultimately matriculate. UCL receives ~3,000–3,800 applications for 334 places (only 24 Overseas), interviews about 1,000, and historically around 78% of those interviewed receive an offer — so the UCAT threshold is the competitive choke-point.
Does UCL score the personal statement?
No — the personal statement is not scored or ranked for interview selection. However, it may be discussed at the MMI, so it must be accurate, reflective and something you can confidently speak to.
